A well maintained, dry chicken housing unit with healthy chickens in it (be it brooder or coop/run) will not have a foul odor.

When our guys were really little and inside I had to change their paper a couple times a day. How often are you changing their bedding? If you keep on top of that it helps but by 7 weeks they were just pooping more often and bigger poops than I could keep up with while working and they got banished to the laundry and then the garage. (Ours were in a large birdcage)

They shouldn't need washing, it can actually be bad for them unless you make sure you carefully get each one totally dry again at the end of it. Just concentrate on multiple cage cleans a day or try a set up like suggested above where you can have a nice thick layer of bedding that can be scratched through so the poops get buried and once they are outside the problem should solve itself.
