How do you heat the laying boxes?

I wouldn't throw frozen eggs away. They can be scrambled and fed back to the hens at the very least.

I live in SC so this hasn't been a problem for me. But, frozen eggs were a problem in WV.

Any clean eggs, if only cracked, were eaten the next morning at breakfast. Busted eggs went straight into the hog bucket.

If you don't want to feed eggs back to the chickens, they would be OK to feed to your dog after being cooked. If you don't have a dog, put them in a compost pile.

.........out of ideas now....... :)

Why? I mean about the ceramic eggs

Someone posted on another thread that when he gets frozen eggs, he just cracks them open into a skillet and watch them turn into regular eggs.
Ceramic eggs are there to entice the birds to lay in the nest boxes.

Lots of info about this on this list.

Most of my eggs go to family and friends, 90%.

Actually got complaints last year!
I had to explain why some eggs looked funny...

I don't want to ruin my reputation...

My dog can only eat so many.

I'm doing this as a hobby, and I'm bored...need something to keep my mind active.

Oooh, I like that idea! Much cheaper to buy and operate then a reptile heating pad! And I agree, you'd only have to run them from ~7am until the last egg is laid or one gets home from work.

On second thought (edit to say) I would probably do fine down to a few minus degrees but once my area hits -30C eggs may still freeze? Any thoughts?

Ron...maybe you could keep this thread updated with your observations and temp readings...for some reason the article comments don't show up in the subscription list.

I'm curious as to what the temp of your ceramic eggs(or real eggs) are vs. various ambient temps you have there.

Was also wondering if the hens might spend more time in the warm nests when they are supposed to be roosting.

Absolutely.

I got excited last night hearing that our temperatures were going below freezing last night for the first time.

I went into the coop this morning to see no thermo cubes activated.

My thermometer temperature history indicated that 36F was the lowest temperature achieved...

I never would have thought I would welcome freezing temperatures

I also wonder about hens loitering in heated nests. I am in SC so there is no need for me to heat nests. But, I think if i had to worry about frozen eggs, I would adapt my roll-away nests so the area that stores the eggs was heated from below. The heating pad discussed earlier would probably work real well. Or if you are DIY handy man you could build a box over the storage area on the roll away nest and install a house hold box on a thermostat.
