How do you keep ducks out of the horse water troughs please?

How do you keep ducks out of the horse water troughs please? They bathe and poop in it. They have a separate pool that I fill up daily, but they discovered the water trough I am afraid if I put something over it like a board they will get stuck under it and drown. ideas please?

Is there some sort of a grate that the horse’s heads can fit through but wthe ducks couldn’t?

I am so surprised. My muscovy are stinkers and don't go in their wading pool from one month to another. I don't know how to resolve your problem. Is the issue that the ducks are polluting the horses' drinking water?

My Muscovy ducks do this too. Have you thought about clipping their wings?

I’m afraid I’m no help: when I saw your question I almost laughed because my ducks will go in any water and nothing except a high fence will stop them. Now that my ducks have a fenced in pasture they no longer go around ruining all the livestock water
