How do you keep your chickens entertained

It's funny- I just posted this reply a little bit ago. Chicks love greens. Use your own judgment. I have always given my chicks SMALL amounts of fine chopped greens. NO PESTICIDES! Kale, scallions, chives, chard, dandelion greens, oriental greens (and shredded carrots and soaked oatmeal. ) There are many sites on the internet for natural rearing. Research them before you jump in. I have yet to loose a chick. I also feed chick scratch etc....

My chicks seemed as though they were getting kinda bored. We took some string (the kind you tie up roasts and other meats with), and tied a jar ring onto it. Then looped the other end and tied it tight and let it hang. They love it! We have a little runt chick that only ate, drank, and slept. We were actually a little worried about her. Well, as soon as we hung up the "jar lid swing", she has come out of her shell (

) and tugs and pulls on that string until she wears herself out. It is really funny to watch them try to grab the string and run off with it.

I have a radio on in the coop (and had one in the brooder too) that I play the local classical music station for my RIR's 24/7. Storey's Guide suggested this and I find it to work very well.

People think I spoil them and/or that I am nuts, but I've had no problems with them pecking each other. They actually sit and listen contently.

One time that it came unplugged, I accidentally changed the station to the local pop music station (93.1 instead of 91.3) and they freaked out on me. You would have thought the coop was on fire. and it's really funny to come home from work on Friday nights to see them sitting around jamming to Frank Sinatra. Hilarious!

I use the canning jar ring tied with yarn. They love to play with that. I also have a large square hand mirror that they love to look at and to cuddle next to. I did sing to them the other night when they were so restless. They settled right down when I sang "Amazing Grace". At least some one likes my singing...lol! I may have to put a radio in there to sooth them.
