How do you know if an egg is fertile?

I've cracked some to eat some and just thought they looked like that to find out their fertile.

Another thought. It sounds like your roo is a Silkie, which I assume is bantam. Some bantam roos can fertilize a large fowl hen just fine, sometimes not.

Okay, if you're not setting eggs until spring, I'm guessing you're eating the eggs between now and then? Check for the bullseye. One roo for 8 hens, all eggs should be fertile. One word of warning, leghorns aren't known for their meaty carcasses, so if you're wanting a large meat bird, you might want to find a different roo.
