How do you know if they are fertilized?

yes that is signs of an embryo probably 3 or 4 days into development.

Next time you want to check fertility, check eggs your going to be eating. If you have eggs under a hen for hatching or in a bator, wait till day 7-10 and then candle them with a bright little flashlight in a dark room, you will see a dark spot and veins really well by day 7.

Leave any others your trying to incubate alone until then, and then candle them with a light in a dark room, quickly then pop them back in (or under your broody)

lol, because i am a first time egg mommy with eggs from my own hens and have absolutely no patience sourland!!! hehe... i can definitely say that i feel really bad about murdering a potential chicky, and will never be trying that again!!!!!

but at least now i know my roo is doing his job, even is he does hate me, i guess he can stay...

all eggs i have are in the incubator, and it just decided to drop back down into the 30s so i doubt i'll be getting anymore anytime soon... otherwise i would have check without cracking one of those.

i think this will end up being more addicting then going a picking out little 3 day old ones out from the feed stores! ... this could be bad.... LOL

Also, is there a way to guess how many are actually fertilized? i opened 2 and only one was, the other was nothing, same hen too.
