I am curious... If I only got 3 out of 4 eggs one day how would I know which one didn't?

food coloring on the vent area will tell you who IS laying

Works great too

So how exactly is that done?

If you inspect their vents the layers will have moist stretched out vents. The sand baggers will have dry puckered vents. Some hens lay everyother day and this one doesn't work as well with them.

Very easy. I have never done this but did read in a book my girlfriend got me about chickens. Look at the egg shooter and if it is all dry NO EGGS. If wet then you are getting eggs from that chicken........jim s

With 4 girls, it's pretty easy to just observe over time and learn who is laying what egg. I've got six, and a pretty good idea of which egg comes out of which bum.

Try the food coloring thing to start you off, then, after you've learned the features of each hen's egg, you should be able to tell without

If you're thinking of culling a slacker, though, I'd go through the trouble of separating everyone for a week or two to be sure!

Does it make a difference if its liquid or paste food coloring?
And are you sure this will work?
I have 5 barred rocks and one of them is laying a "gorgeous" egg. I'd like to be able to isolate her and breed her to my big maran roo. But I don't know which one, of the 5, she is.
