How do you make a profit selling eating eggs?

My question to you is - Are they free range or in runs? Because that makes a big impact on how much you lose or save. We sell for $2 per dozen and will raise to $3 once our colors expand, and so far it pays off pretty well. . . But we free range, so the girls really don't need all that much feed. They have 3 acres of endless varieties of stuff to eat, and especially once summer rolls in they'll have even more, plus our Marans, Araucanas, Ameraucanas, and Jerseys will begin to lay too, so the rainbow will expand. . . And since I live in a chicken-free area, people are quite new to the thought of free range, non-store bought eggs and especially colored eggs.

Penturner,

What is that saying... a picture is worth a thousand words.

Yep... that is why I have chickens. I am sure I don't even come close to breaking even... and don't care to know. :)

NOW I CAN PAY FOR MY POLISH CHICKS THAT ARE COMING . THAT MADE MY DAY SO I WANTED TO SHARE.

I can come out ahead with just eating eggs, but not enough to write home about. I would have to agree that the money with eggs is with the chick potential. I just bought an incubator and hatcher with a few other supplies for a great price.....400. I can hatch out over 200 eggs every hatch. So what I have to ask myself is do I want 3 dollars a dozen or 3.00/chick or 2 for 5.00.....as I have mostly been doing. I think with my last hatch, about 20 eggs either didn't hatch or started and didn't make it; which is very good.
Of course I have to be prepared to start raising chicks, because not everyone will show up when they are 3 days old, but after I have invested a bit of feed and they start feathering out and I can tell what they are the price goes up, so I still am not the loser. I am truely doing well with my projects.
There are a lot of ways to come out ahead. Just look at what you have and search out other food alternatives.

yep same here, more money is in teh chicks and fertile eggs. I have 3 brodders full of chicks, i raise them and sell them and most i am keeping for breeding purpose, and yep teh older they are it goes up $1.00 a week i start at 4 or 5. or 6 depending on the breed.

But i love doing the fresh eggs, i love seeing peaple ask for them, it is like a rush knowing peplae would rather have yours over stores .

I just started selling eating eggs and I get 4-5 dollars a dozen depending. People seem to appreciate the difference in the eggs. Most of my hens/pullets just started laying so egg size will hopefully increase. Right now I have mostly brown eggs but have Marans, Ameraucanas and Araucanas in the brooders. Certainly a larger profit margin is in selling hatching eggs and chicks as well as feathered birds. I have too many chickens to say if a profit is being made right now. As long as they come close to paying for their own feed, I would never know just how much I spend in labor (my own ha ha) but I love it more eggs in bator now and as soon as there is room some of Deerman’s PH games.

now that sad, poor things all cooped up liek that, i feel bad when i see that.

Yup makes me feel bad too, can't wait to get our laying hens, so I can quit supporting such practices! Our chicks arrive this friday, so then I just have to wait till they lay!

Profit? HaHaHaHaHaHa...........well, not in cash money anyway-----I profit in having to get up early to let them out, I profit in fresh eggs, meat, and fertilizer for the Garden, which profits me with sore back, callused hands and sun induced crows feet on my face. I profit with the city-folk relatives visiting and eating me out of house and home cause its free - growing out of the ground and all- So I guess I wouldn't have it any other way!

How do you make a profit selling eating eggs?

You don't.

Most people want something for nothing and many don't have a clue what it takes to produce an egg. It is too easy to walk in to a store and pick up a bright white clean carton and be on your way in a matter of minutes.
