How do you make your nesting boxes??? show us how you make YOURS! make sure to include some pics if you can, So that we are not "brain-storming" all day trying to imagine how it looks. I want to make some good nesting boxes and I have no idea on how to make one

well I do but I want one that works one that doesn't fall when one hen steps inside the box.

I have had wooden mounted nests but I find that the x large cat boxes with hood works best. My girls have more privacy as the lower lip is about 5 inches. They are pretty slippery so they don't roost on them and poop on them.

Some people on this sight have some really beautiful nest boxes... I wanted to keep it simple (due to limited construction skills) and I wanted to reuse and repurpose as much as possible. So- I took an old wooden trunk/blanket chest took the door off the hinges and divided the box into 4 sections. I ran a board across the bottom, to keep shavings and eggs in place. It is not fancy, but it works perfectly. Good luck and enjoy!

I built mine out of some pine boards I had laying I used the pine boards for the 4 sides, then used panneling (or plywood will work too) for the bottom.

I have milk crates with a thin board I zip tied to the crate to keep the nest in place.

Speakin of nesting boxes...I built a set of them,

before I found BYC

and being new to raisin chickens , I built them rather small ? 8x12x12...???
Is 8in wide too narrow?? I think they look too small..
I wont get my new flock till April , so I have plenty of time to redo them. We lost our first flock to foxes last July.
I plan on a flock of 6-10 large and 6-10 bantys. Cant wait!!

I have the 12x12x12 set of 4 boxes already made and hung and ready to go ....
We built a new ''Fort Knox'' coop , an 8x8x7 barn style building, so the foxes wont be a problem ever again!! But I do wonder about those little nestin boxes!! LOL Thanks in advance for the input! You all have helped me sooo much since I joined!!

A work in progress, we are converting a section of a large storage shed for the coop. Here are the construction photos of the nest boxes. Still need a perch and the latching egg collection door opening. This is my first post and first attempt to import photos.

Would you like to raid the boxes without going inside the coup? Check out the nesting boxes I designed. They save space inside the coup and they can be removed for cleaning. I plan to line them with shower pan liner I got cheap at Lowes. You can see them at my site st the link below. You will soon see them installed on my coup.

I used white square bottom buckets ....cut in half....one side has a " U " shape cut out for the hen to get in easy and a 2 x 4 screwed on the front for a perch....

I have some milk crates on a shelf. The board over the top just has two nails to hold it up and it rests on the crates.
