How do you manage going away from home for a few days?

I always worry about food tipping over. I camp all summer, my neighbor cares for my cat, and this year will also care for the chickens. She's very responsible, and loves all creatures.

We're going away for Memorial day, the big girls will probably be outside by then, and we're going to take the silkies with us-I'm just uncomfortable leaving them in my house with the cat. The time he'll have to plot is too much for my imagination. A big tupperware with a couple of silkies won't be too much trouble on the trip. I'll have 6 kids 2 dogs and a husband. The chickens are the easy part!

Thank God we have a camper-tent camping would probably not work out!!!

Can you check at the local pet store for an animal over or an employee that would like to earn some extra money? If they are employed already, odds are they'll be responsible enough to make sure food and water is available to the chickens.

We hired a high school girl from around the corner who came. She's in FFA and has chickens, ducks, llamas, and show cattle so she did great and everything went well. Her younger brother helped her too. We paid them $10 a day and they kept the eggs.

We hired a college student to house sit while we were gone for 2 weeks. He stayed at the house and took care of the dogs and chickens, watered the plants, brought the paper/mail in etc. We paid him $25 per day and he did a wonderful job. It's worth it for the piece of mind.
