exactly what I do! usually I have to hammer the ice out (because it will get solid here), but then I always make the big ice block many little chicken-sized chunks of ice. the hens can then eat the ice, and they get the same amount of water.Flip, stomp, refill.
Bigger containers if not frozen solid just bust ice.
If things get too solid. It's hammer time. Claw side of hammer, hatchet or sturdy shovel blade.
