How do you manage treating 5 chickens with bumblefoot?

@chickengr how would you treat an infected bumblefoot like this? This was from last week and it started turning green so I cut it out while she was on amoxicillin. I didn't see a plug or pus but just a lot of blood, but when I checked two days ago, it looks like there's some pus on the wound and the surrounding areas look either infected or bruised. In hindsight, I should've tried a needle first to see if I could extract any pus. She had a black plug on both feet a few weeks ago but I was going on vacation and couldn't treat her until I got back. But by the time I came back, I think it spread and got in deeper because I couldn't see the black plug anymore.

I'm going to check the wound later today and plan to give her an Epsom salt foot soak with chlorhexidine and wrap with Neosporin after. Her course of amoxicillin (10 days) is done on Sunday so I can see what it looks like then. If it still doesn't look like it's improving I'll give her probiotics and yogurt until the doxycycline I ordered gets here on Thursday and start her on that then for another 10 days.

I would soak it and when pus forms would squeeze it and apply neosporin. if it doesn't get better within a week I would give her doxy orally. it does not look as bad. keep us posted.

sorry for the late reply, it is 7:45 am here.

I made the mistake of thinking it was really bad and that I had to cut it out. It was a huge mistake. The site is now infected and the foot is turning green. She seems fine otherwise but I think she'll need surgery and I can't afford that at the vet. I'm thinking I might need to put her down soon if it keeps spreading. The doxy should get here next Thursday but the infection seems like it's spreading fast. I'll just keep giving her amoxicillin until then but I think I shouldn't change the wrap anymore because it makes me freak out whenever I look at it.

it is normal that it turns green. keep soaking, squeeze some liquid and apply neosporin or blu-kote. don't squeeze too much. wrap her foot afterwards. stop amoxicillin as it does nothing for bumblefoot.

Ahh ok. I'm just not used to seeing wounds on chickens then. I think the amoxicillin did help with a secondary infection she had. (See photo for reference). She still has some cracks on that foot though. Tomorrow is the 10th day of her being on it so maybe I'll stop it and then put her on doxycycline when it gets here on Thursday.

How long do you keep your chickens in a dog cage? Do you let them out for a day to dust bathe?

Can you use this with Neosporin? I've been using Vetericyn, but since she has an open wound now, I'm using chlorhexidine with her Epsom salt foot soa daily soaks

I have moved my hen from crate to small makeshift day time area that's very small but gets sun and grass. Only moved her to dust bath yesterday(1st time in 3 or 4 days) and as soon as she stood up, back to the makeshift daytime area. But that's only cause I'm home and around that it works for us. I wouldn't risk the bird getting stepped on or bothered if you can't supervise.
