How do you name your chickens?

Either an army title or a royalty title.
For example I’ve had Prince, Duke, General, Admiral, Captain, Brigadier, Squire,

My grandpa used to have Shetland ponies he used to pull carts or wagons. I was a kid then and they always had the military rank names.
I remember Admiral and General. After those came and went he got one for my brother and named it Sergeant. A bit later he found one for me. He named it Dick.
I never asked and never quite figured that one out.

I have the theme of women author s. I have had Harper Lee, Agatha Christie, Amy Tan, Mary Shelley, and Louise Penny, all gone now. Currently, I have Nevada Barr, Celeste Ng, Willa Cather, and the exception to the theme is Elvira, my BCM, because it just suited her.

I don’t have any particular convention for naming my chickens; the names have all presented themselves. I have Whitetail, Narcissa, Constance, Lillith, Evie, Yinny and Lorraine.

Lorraine was named by her previous family but it’s an excellent name for her. I think of her like a tall, eccentric old aunt wearing a pajama suit.

I really don’t have a system for naming mine, but I try to pick a name that comes from the country where they were first bred. Here are the stories behind my chickens’ names:
Welsummer: Lydwinne because these birds were originally from Holland
Plymouth Rock: Prudence, because it was a common Puritan name in New England
Cream Legbar: Wilhelmina because she was supposed to be a Barnevelder (which were developed in Germany) but never got a name change.
Delaware: Rose because I needed to name her after a Dominican Saint (St Rose of Lima)…it was just something I had to do.

I won’t bore you with how my other nine birds and other pets got named !
