How do you prevent splay leg?

Does splay leg occur after the chick is born or does it happen while developing in the egg. If you keep it in the incubator longer will that help prevent splay leg? I have tried using bandaids as splints many times.There is a lot of babysitting involved in getting food and water to the chick. If I just leave it alone will the chick be able to strenghten its legs by itself?

From what I have read on this message board and other internet sites, spraddle leg must be treated in the first few days. Otherwise the hen will not be able to walk normally (if at all).

I only get spray leg when I take them out of the incubator too soon, I found the longer I leave them in, they better off they are!
