How do you raise tame chickens?

Uncooked oatmeal huh? I'll give that a try when I go out the evening. I built them a box twice as large and twice as deep as their original one. I wasn't so concerned they'd get too crowded but concerned they keep eyeing the sky and a couple have grown large enough that their flapping attempts have gained them about 90% of the elevation they need to escape. I'll rest moire easily now. Thanks again for the oatmeal tip.

I just now tried uncooked oatmeal. One was slightly curious and pecked at the flakes but just picked them up and tossed them into the wood shavings. She would do that most of the times I presented the oatmeal.........but not one of the other six even gave my hand a second look.

I'm really sorry I sold the 400 gal water tub. I was able to get in and just sit and read a book and let them hop and crawl all over me. No way to do that with this box.

Took out a handful of oatmeal today. Maggie immediately jumped onto my hand and I felt a few pecks on my had under her as the other's curiousity brought them to the flakes........but no-one ate anything. They'd rather eat the wood chip bedding. Got to find some way to get them to run to me when I first show up. Will try meal worms next but I can't drive right now.

Wrecked my motorcycle two weeks ago and dislocated my knee. It was a real nasty dislocation and I'm on crutches or a walker and in a ton of pain. My foam brace has my leg in one rigid member making it almost impossible to get in my truck. When my wife takes me to the Doctor's office, I have to ride crossways in the back seat. The last two weeks have been rather trying.

Oh no! I’m so sorry hope it heals soon! It always takes a day or two for them to eat the oats try breaking it up and sprinkling it on the ground on your leg or a brick something other than your hand until they’re used to it? This is how I get mine to eat it then they won’t stop! It’s really weird that your buffs are so afraid they always were as friendly as all my other chicks hope they become friendly soon!!

My chicks go crazy for wet feed in a mash.... I am not sure why. Maybe it's the smell and texture? Even my shyest pullet, Dot, will join the others in a feeding frenzy of wet mash in my palm.

I'm going to chop it up and put it in their feed bowl. I intoduced carrots to my Llamas that way and they became quite a treat in the whole. As soon as they got use to the flavor a full carrot handed to t hem was something to almost fight over. Had 25 Llamas at one point and it would take them just a few minute to decimate a 2# back of carrots. But I digress.......................

As far as the Buffs...........nothing I do or don't do gets them to allow touching. And when I do pick one up the screeching and screaming makes it obvious they think I'm going to harm them. Oh well, they are only coming up on 3 weeks old, so I've plenty of time to soften nthem up.

Success!!! I guess my chickie-girls had a meeting after I tried hand feeding them this afternoon.............and I won the vote! I just took out some oatmeal to see if they liked it and ALL SEVEN of them attacked my hand.........even the Buffs! Thanks for the tip. Think I'm on the road to success.

I sit with mine everyday after cleaning up and a few come sit on my shoulder or in my lap. If I bring their food tray over and tap on it they all come running. Just keep at it spending as much time as you can with them and give a few treats or even use their own food. Good luck!
