Using the Julian date is fairly common in food manufacturing (human and animal).

They had been giving "normal" dates but switched to Julian a few years ago.

I agree it's absolutely frustrating when in a hurry.

Yup. Historically common and requires a much simpler machine to simply increment the Julian date rather than a computer to maintain human-readable dates.

Not the final product, but for the raw bulk ingredients.

I worked in a bakery type food manufacturing plant and all of the flours, sugar, salt, and other ingredients that came in 50 pound bags, 50 bags to a pallet, 18 pallets to a truck load were generally all marked with the Julian date of manufacture and lot code.
