How do you resist Feed store chicks

TSC = no. They mislabel and mix them up too much.

Other feed stores are hard to say no to. I plan to pick some up this spring. Last time I did, I got 2 of my favorite hens. I got really lucky choosing 2 Silkie pullets!

Disclaimer: I just love chickens. All of them. I'm not that picky because I'm not breeding.

This. 100%. I ended up with three free chickens because they sold someone some Polish chicks...when they were in fact SLW.

I think about all the health issues I deal with from chicks from feed store. If you look closely, or not, the poor things are super stressed, small and walking into each other. Crooked beaks too!

I will say that when I bring home feed store chicks and introduce them to the Momma Heating Pad set up, their first experience with a dark, warm, quiet place - they tend to disappear until the next morning. The first time I thought they'd all died, but they were just so exhausted from the 24/7 lights and all the noise. I always give them the first day and most of the next to recover before introducing them to their "final" momma - an actual hen.

The chicks in TSC come from a big hatchery where they just churn out hundreds of chicks. They are not breeding for health or looks, they are breeding purely for money. So, you are bound to get chicks with health problems that die after just a few months or years.
If you want good, healthy chickens that live a long time, you should research strong, hardy breeds and then find a really good breeder that has them. You can look for a place that is NPIP certified, which means that they are part of a program that is working towards stronger and healthier chickens.

The hatcheries for feed store chicks are the chicken equivalent of the puppy mills that provide sickly pet store puppies. I used to work for a huge vet practice and we saw pet store puppies all the time. My sister even got one even after I warned her. She had it for two weeks then ended up with an unfit for sale letter from her vet and a had to return it. I worry constantly about the chicks I get from a local hatchery I don't think I could take the mental anguish of those poor feed store chicks.

Yes, thank you!! I understand now! Like a puppy mill, etc. I’m banned From a local Walmart because I had a meltdown about the condition of their Bettas! I will not feed this problem! When is time for new chicks, I’ll do my research.
