How do you store your poultry feed?

I think some of you are confusing the term Bulk Livestock Feed with Bulk Food as in what you would get at a "Bulk Food Store".
When your buying Bulk Livestock Feed you are gross amount feed over a "x" amount of pounds, it can be a brand name feed or mill mixed.

Some mills will give a small discount when you buy 500 lbs or more but most mill call a bulk order anything over 1000 or 2000 pounds.

When I look up bulk grains/feeds, I'm mostly finding discounted prices on orders of 200 metric tons to 3000 metric tons! Um... who needs 3000 metric tons of almost anything? For orders smaller than that, it's even more expensive than buying 50 lbs. at a time. To be fair, I haven't looked incredibly hard or long, though.

Most feed mill will not have a website so most of what your going to find online is going to be wholesale dealers.
I should also state that there is a difference between bulk retail and bulk wholesale.

Quote: I am in Southern California and in San Diego. The nearest feed mill to me is in El Centro about a hundred miles away. The nearest Organic feed mill is in a couple of hundred miles away. Both will do bulk and their minimums are 2000 lbs. One provides a bulk container like a bigg sand bag which has to be loaded with a fork lift. And you have to put a deposit on it. The other just dumps the feed in the back of your pick up. AND the minimum order for a custom mix is 2000 lbs.

Like I said on an earlier post. For BackYard poultry people like me.... The best you can do is go in with a couple of other people pool your money and divide a bulk purchase between you. Including the cost of driving to the Mill and bringing it back. That alone for me Keeps me buying from the local feed store.

I store why feed and wheat in 2 55 gallon drums out side in the run. They are both food grade drums (the inside of the drum is powder coated) with a type of snap ring on the lid. The lid has a rubber gasket to keep out moisture. I still cover the drums with a piece of plywood so if it rains and snows it will not pool on top of the lids. I put a 20 lb brick on top of the wood so the wind dosn't blow of the wood. Each drum holds close 350 lbs of grain.

This is exactly how they described it to me. You'd need a forklift at home to take it off the truck. The bag costs either $30 or $50 - I can't remember.. You can't store the food in the bag, it has to be in a big storage container(s) and I don't have the room for that much feed.. Plus it would go stale.. I like fresh stuff. :)

We have metal trash cans with lids. We had a rat problem a few years back & they chewed through everything else.
