I just got 4 chicks (buff orp, golden sex link, brahma and an australorp). Even though it was a "day old," the australorp wings were feathered. It's quite aggressive, pecking at me and my daughter. My daughter is afraid to hold that one. I know you're supposed to get them used to people while they're chicks, but maybe I'm just traumatizing this bird and making it meaner by trying to hold it. Any suggestions? Do you hold it until it calms. Hold several times for brief periods?

Hmmm...
sounds like the Aussie is either a few days older... or a roo. You might try putting a few crumbles in your hand when you hold it - Otherwise, you just need to use your instincts. Some birds are just closer to the jungle bird than others, and might be tougher to tame. I have 6 of the friendliest hens I have ever known, and one who is a full on wingnut - all from the same batch, all raised together in my office and on my lap... go figure.

Wait till they are a bit older (2 weeks?) and start offering small mealworms out of your hand. They'll warm up to you FAST!!!!
