Hi, I would like to know how and when to trim roo spurs, or even if I can without really hurting the roo?

I just hold the bird firmly brace the leg with one hand while firmly twisting off the spurs with just my hand, they twist right off without any pain or discomfort to the cock. EEEEasyyyy Peeezzzyyy. There are ton's of you tube videos out on how to do this, even the female chicken owners who always seem to freak out over any emotional something or other find it easy to do.

I don't think I could do that, won't it bleed a lot, It's that like twisting your fingernail off, I am a female chicken owner and i don't think i can do that !

At our local fair last year a 10 YO in 4-H used this method of de-spurring a Roo as his public presentation. Look it up on YouT- It really isn't that bad, if there is blood use some blood stop or flour.

Really, not bad at all.

Thanks for the info! I will definitely try this when the time comes!

Hi, I don't have a lot of experience with this but we had a roo that had spurs growing around back into his leg. I used dog nail clippers ( the scissor type not the guilitine type) and just trimmed them down. Everyone was happy.

No there is no blood and it is painless for the rooster, don't worry I think this method was developed just for the gal's who freak out over anything like this LOL. The part you remove is the outer shell of the spur leaving the newer little spur quick. The best part for you guy's is you won't have to send your little F00-Foo frizzled frazzled chicken to therapy afterwards LOL. It doesn't remove the whole spur which I like just the outer shell, kind of like a snake shedding it's old skin.

I was watching "Animal Cops, Houston," the other day and they seized several hundred birds. Two of them were cocks, badly in need of spur trimming.
They used a pair of end nippers to trim them, the same ones you use on a fence or horses hooves.

Just nipped em right off.
