How does she move these?

It is fascinating to watch them do it and worth the spy time if you have a hen doing it regularly. It's one of those things you have to see to believe! Beak down and around, tuck, lift, move:)

Remember that party game where you pass an orange from person to person not using your hands....you have to hold the orange with your chin/shoulder/neck type of thing. When I have seen my hen moving an egg---she kind of hooks her beak around it and then cradles it in her neck ---just like that party game.

chickens never cease to amaze me.

Somebody has to put a webcam in their coop or something and get a movie of this. I know mine do it, too. All of my nest boxes are divided and the eggs get moved all over the place, especially earlier when I had five broodies. Nobody is broody right now (knocking on all the wood I can find)...but a movie of this would be a hit on YouTube!

you took the words out of my mouth, oh please somebody set up cams and record this for posterity, or BYCers whatever. There could be a contest for the most clever way of stealing eggs.

I have managed to get a snapshot of my very first broody, Buffy the Vampire-Slaying Orpington, move an egg out of a nest box with a lip to keep in pine shavings and eggs. She had the egg tucked under her beak, in the curve of her neck and against her breast. She moved them back onto the nest when the weather cooled and it wasn't so "close" and not in the nest box.
