I have become completely smitten with Wellsummers and I know a guy who has a pair of them. Can someone tell me what they think of this Roo? I'm considering getting some eggs to either put in a bator, or letting a broody hatch.

I am curious what the experts have to say too. I just got some Wellies and can't really offer a critique yet. I'm anxious to see how mine turn out. I saw the parents of my chicks and they look pretty good to me (I'm a noob, what do I know?). But three weeks in, my chicks are all over the board. I've got one runt, some that are almost completely feathered, and one that is gigantic but sparsely feathered (I'm thinking that ones a roo). I was pretty happy with the color of eggs they hatched from too, I'm hoping for more speckles though. Good luck.

We are the proud owners of a couple of almost-three week old Wellies ourselves. We were lucky in that we got to see the parents of the chicks, and if they are anything like them, they will be real beauties! I went from not wanting chickens to researching them and deciding I had to have some Welsummers.

I am not an expert by any means, but that is a good-looking rooster right there. He has (from what I can tell) good colour, good sheen, and a good stance. Again, I am NOT an expert and you should really rely on others that know a lot more than I do about this breed. I just saw the word "Welsummer" in the heading and had to come see.

Thanks for your opinions! I think he's a gorgeous bird too! I just love this breed, and like you said, I went from "eh we dont NEED chickens", to absolutely LOVING my chickens and then finding the wellsummers, and I can just remember saying, "WOW I need me some o' dem!"

I'm more of a Marans expert, not a Welsummer expert - But I can already tell you small things like his comb has 7 points, not 5. (not incredibly important though) - Also his chest should be solid black, it looks to have a lot of red in it.

Otherwise, he looks nice - But you need a better pic of him.

Is it me but the topline and chest line looks like it has been traced to make it "cleaner" look. See the black lines. did you do the tracing or did the guy do that? If the guy did that, something tells me he may be hiding a flaw or fault.

too many points on the roo (judges like five points better than six LOL), and I agree too much red in the chest. He should have a chest similiar to this one:

I do not know if it is how he moves his head but his wattles got "folds" in the center, it should NOT have any. It should have a nice round surface without any bends or folds in the center of the circle. Its ok to have wrinkles on the outside of the circle, closer to his ears.
I noticed the hens are very light for a Welsummer so it could be due to the hatchery blood or the sunlight bouncing off the feathers.

If it was me, I can find something better but if that is all you have to work with, enjoy them!
