Years ago when I raised chickens and still lived at home, we lived out in the country on the edge of the woods and our chickens would range pretty far out from where their coop was. At a couple of other places that we lived with the chickens, they didn't seem to go as far. My current chickens are penned up but they have the entire backyard to range and they pretty much stay under the back deck or over by the dog kennels where they dirt bath.
