How has chicken maths got you??

I started off with 5 buff Orpingtons. For 10 years they survived then a coon came and killed all 5 of them. We were devastated. None of them were laying anymore but they lived so long!! Fast forward- my dad built a giant coop and we have a shed as well. And now we have 66 buff Orpington hens and 2 buff Orpington Roos! That’s my coop^^

And just 2 years ago we bought 30 duck eggs and 25 hatched and lived. Now we have 24 hens and 1 happy lucky drake

I'm superstitious about having odd numbers of pets, so all of my cats, dogs, and rabbits are in 2s or 4s. (I always have to "increase" the numbers, so none of them die inadvertently). My chickens now follow suit.

My first batch of chicks happened to be 5, so I *knew* I would be changing that asap.

5 chicks
plus 2 more
minus 1 a-hole rooster (re-homed, not freezer)
----------------------------------------
6 chickens holding steady for a while
until the next spring
plus 4 more chicks (I'd only planned on 3, but it would have been an odd number)
--------------------
10 chickens holding steady but
minus 1 due to heat stroke (we think)
--------------------------------
9 chickens now -- an odd number. I am uneasy.

I am eyeing a young Frizzle rooster on Craigslist.

Sidenote: the town ordinance only allows for 4 hens. haha!
