how high a fence on run

We fenced a good sized run for our chickens, mostly to keep them out of the garden. It's 6 foot chicken wire. They are still getting out. Are they going over it? Or is there a hole somewhere where they are escaping. I don't really want to clip wings if I don't have to. So...how high can they fly?

i have 2 isa browns that have there wings cliped i once saw them trying to fly over it only getting about half way up a 6 wire fence,they never tried again.i recomend that if you dont want them out you should clip there wings

I covered mine with 2" nylon netting secured to the top of the fence to keep the Hawks from getting the girls. Bonus, I can leave their wings alone because they can't fly out now. Ours is a 25' x 50' run. Netting only cost about $48.

I have a RIR named Houdini. She can get out of just about any run. My run is 6ft high and she still jumps over it. I had to take an additional 3 ft of plastic fencing mount it to the top of the 6ft fence and postition it so that it leans inward at about 60degrees. Now she just jumps into it when she tries.


Well, that's unless the morning glories haven't grown over it. She uses them to climb out too!

I agree with SandyK about the aviary netting. I hate the thought of clipping their wings. I like for them to be able to get away from a ground predator if they were ever to get out or if something were to get in.
