How high can a delaware and a rhode island red get.

Im new to the chicken egg laying thing. I have them in my backyard in a tractor. I like letting them out and they like it too i just don't always feel like sitting out there there is a 8' privacy fence around most of the yard in the front its only 5' they don't seem to want to leave how concerned should i be can they even make it over.

Mostly my Lakenvelders fly but the heavier the bird the less high they fly....my reds go far but not high...hope they stay in the yard!

I have RIRs but not Delawares. My RIR rooster is outside at all times. He never sleeps in a coop and he roosts in a tree about 15 feet off the ground. He flies to a limb about 8 - 10 feet and then hops up the rest of the way.....all my hens go back into the coop at night though. I have a few other chickens (just not RIRS) that roost up like that too.

If they are truly motivated, they can probably make it over the 5 foot fence without too much problem. I have a 5 foot fence around the run and they have never shown any signs of getting out. Mine are not fully grown yet so they should be able to fly better than a fully grown Delaware or RIR.

I don't know what motivates some chickens to wander (other than getting away from real or perceived danger) and any time you take your chickens out you are taking a chance, but I'd be comfortable letting them roam inside the 8' and 5' fence until they proved I had a reason to worry, at least as far as them going over the fence. My other worry would be things coming into the yard after them, but that was not your question and you have to be able to evaluate your specific conditions.

all of my fences are only 4 feet high

most of the birds stay in..

the larger the area, the lower the fence has to be..

you should have no trouble keeping them in. If they decide to go over the 5 foot fence, block off their access to it and keep them in the 8 ft part..
