How high can Barred Rocks fly?

Excitedly preparing for my first batch of chickens. I like flowers and am wondering if I begin using hanging planters how high they have to be so the girls don't eat them all. Trying to keep things as natural as can be, so I'd rather not clip their wings (unless they get over the garden fence) and allow them to free range.

Depending on the level of determination I’ve seen them fly as high as 10ft. One of my Rhode Island Reds has gotten about 15ft. As long as they arent inside the coop or run I’d say 5-6ft would be high enough. It’s not very big area to land on so they aren’t likely to try it. Mine leave the window boxes alone when they free range and those are only maybe 4 feet off the ground.

Yea, I'm thinking maybe they don't want to land on a round planter. Thanks for sharing about the window boxes also.

Our smaller birds have enticed the standard breed pullets to scale a 10ft wall to get into all the neighbor's backyards. They free range all day in our small orchard, so there's no reason for them to want to fly over the wall besides curiosity. None of the neighbors have grass or trees (although one grows marijuana in their backyard lol).

Our fully grown barred rock was quite large and never tried to jump the wall, but I'd think they'd not be thrilled about jumping up on a hanging planter that would swing around or move.

Yes, they would have to have a reason (greener grass, more bugs, spilled feed...) And the more room they have the less likely they will be to test the fence.

yeah, depends on the chicken, really. Mine didn't bother the lavender, or the magnolias, or the marigolds.

I have never clipped my girls wings, I like them to be able to get away fast if they needed to, and wings help them with that.
