how high off the ground?

My first coop sits on cinder blocks, so it's just off the ground by a few inches.
My add-on is twice as big and we had to raise it up because it's on a hill. It's about 2 1/2 feet up in the back. The girls will love hanging out under it in the rain or heat. I will fence it in with a removeable door for cleaning.
The great part of it is that the opening will lead into my garden, so in the off season they can till up the soil for bugs.

I do worry about snakes hanging out under there though.

Our coop is three feet off the ground, with a little run underneath. This makes it easy to rake out, allows lots of room for food and water, and provides them with nice shade and protection from the rain.

If it is a big walk-in coop and chickens will be allowed access underneath, I'd suggest making it high enough you can retrieve objects, eggs, chickens from under there without doing too nasty of a commando crawl.

If it will be a big walk-in coop with no critter access underneath, 18" is plenty.

If it will be a reach-in coop and your only concern is enough headroom for chickens to go underneath, 18" is quite sufficient (as long as it's only part of their run, not the whole thing).

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
