How high should I make my Jumbo Brown Coturnix Cages?

I have those aviary cages

That's an example of 20 of my cages. I separate by color for my coturnix and my generation, a change in color (I am a genetics gal), they work really well, lots of space for stretching and you can put in dust baths in for them to lay their eggs in. I also have homemade cages of similar design, some rabbit hutches for larger groups, some smaller ones for pairs (believe it or not, I managed to pair some coturnix off for projects

) I have big birds in the Jumbo department, they are usually wobbling more than flying.

I've lost 4 birds in it within a year from them flushing from the neighbors dog!!

FIX THE DOG AND YOU WONT LOOSE ANYMORE BIRDS....

There is no such thing as "the perfect pen height"!

No matter what size/shape/height pen I build...It doesn't, stop the local raper, dog, coon, rat, etc... from testing it's defenses. The only thing I can do is build said pens strong enough to repel, said vectors, and live with the attrition rate until, said vectors give up, or are removed from the equation.

Rapers give up easy, and since they can not be legally removed, then it's a good thing they give up so easily. 1/2" hardware cloth is plenty fine to repel them.

Same with coons, rats and the like...You can...(in most states) terminate the vector with extreme prejudiced.

Well, we have a standing restraining order against K9's/dogs in this county. You get one phone call, "get out of jail free card" and I will never harm a friendly dog. Every infraction after that, it can cost $60-$80, and repeat offenders may be put down.

I digress....

sounds like everyone has a different opinion...LOL...
i have to agree with picco though. a happy bird is a healthy bird and if you only give them an 8" height they cannot stretch etc which they do enjoy. my cages are 12"-24" high and i've had dogs, cats, possum and a hawk at them without any of my birds"flushing" and smacking their heads in the taller cages. I HAVE had injuries in the LOWER ceilinged cages however....
i should have said MINIMUM space alotment should be 1 square foot /bird.

this kina depends on whose info you read I have read a coupla PH'd fellas who would disagree with this figure and one or 2 universities it is a nice figure but not written in stone according to species Leyland Hayes has a " quail breeders news letter" it is full of info University of cali @ Davis has some really good info as well as TAM the different ext offices around the country have some neat pubs as well
