How high should my roosts be?

They're playful and will use it. I dust mine with some food-grade DE and it works into the straw keeping it dry and odor free and treating the birds' feet as they land...

Mine are about 4 feet high. My wyondottes and austrolops became a little over weight in their second year and couldn't get that high. So instead of making a ladder which would get in my way I took a five gallon bucket filled it with rocks and cut a piece of wood to fit on top of the rock and within the lip of the bucket. The "big" girls jump up on the bucket then to the roost. The bucket has a handle to I can just move it when I need to.
So anything that is stable as a aid to get up on the roost can be used if needed.

Good ideas just keep coming!

My chicks are still small, so i'm not worried about anyone breaking a leg from their heavy weight ... YET. But i have time to think about alternatives. I am quickly becoming a fan of d.e., and i love the idea of giving them a place to wipe their feet. But the bucket idea helps me think outside the box - i can use anything i can find around here if a straw bale isn't available when i want it.
