How high should roost be?

I have some heavy breeds and didnt know if the 4 and 5 ft roost were to high. Some of them hop up and down the roost 2 X 4's to get to the top and others fly down. They all seem to want to be as high as possible.

As long as they are higher than the nesting boxes and not so high that they injure themselves trying to flop straight down, it is a good height. Mine are about 4' off the ground, but I have read about other coops that are higher.

My roost is about 4' also. I added a step for them to help them get up easier but they never use it coming back down, they always fly down. Sice they won't use my step coming down I would not want them higher than 4' as they might hurt themselves being a large breed flying down.
