I'm in the Chicago suburbs where it is currently about 80 degrees in my garage. I need to move my 8 four-week old chicks into the garage, but wonder if it is too hot for my chicks in there and if there is not enough ventilation? If the temp is ok, do I remove the heat lamp from the brooder?

At four weeks the chicks shouldn't need a heat lamp in July. Be careful of toxic (to chickens) fumes in the garage. Possibly a back (safe) window can be left open for some ventilation.

Hi Carrie, if you don't have a window and can't leave the door open a crack to get a cross breeze I would say no, don't leave them in there. We are going to be too hot here in the next week, I would worry that the effect of being in the '90s would be cumulative. Is your coop ready for them? Where's your plan to move them next?

Thanks! I don't have a window or a back door to the garage. We've been bringing them outside when the temp gets to 90 in the garage and returning them to the garage when the temp is under 90. Today I can't stay outside with them all day, so I've added ice to their water and opened the door from the house to the garage to introduce some cooler air and thus far, has brought the temp down by about 4 degrees. The coop and run should be finished this week and they will be five weeks old, so we'll transfer to the coop by this weekend.

Can you do anything else than the garage?

I had them in the house for the first 3 weeks, but I have respiratory issues and have to move them out. Keeping the house door to the garage open with some AC filtering in during the day and ice water has helped tremendously. The brooder temp is now 81 and they seem comfortable.
