So, there was a pretty active thread a few weeks ago asking the best method to get rid of moles. Lots of suggestions, a few home remedies, and a few crazy ideas.
I've had trouble with moles since we moved into our home 4.5 years ago. They are always destroying the yard in the same areas. I've tried everything- flooding the holes, poison bait, smoke bombs, ect. Nothing ever worked. So, after thinking it over, I think I've finally discovered a method that works.
What I did was buy glue traps from TSC. The ones there have a nice thick layer of glue. I then took roofing nails and stuck the head of a nail into the glue, coating the head and nail shaft by rotating the nail in the glue. I would create a hole in the mole mound using a metal rod (about 1/2 inch) and drop the glue covered nail down the hole, then cover the hole with a small rock or other object that would seal it shut. Be careful not to collapse the mound. I would drop several glue-nails throughout the mounds and tunnels. My theory was that the moles would run into the glue-nails head first, causing the glue-nail to stick to the mole. If you've ever touched this stuff, you know that once it sticks, it is very difficult to get loose. The glue-nail would make it very difficult for the mole to move through the tunnels and catch food. Thus, eventually causing the mole to die. I would drop several nails in the tunnels to insure that several would become stuck to the mole/s fur.
Since doing this about three weeks ago, the mole activity in my yard has virtually stopped. If I do see any sign of activity, I immediately drop a glue-nail in the tunnel. I've pushed down several tunnels, and there has been no new activity for several days. Normally, the moles would push the ground back up within minutes.
So, it looks like this method is working like a charm. And, it is very very inexpensive. I think four glue traps were just over $3.00. And, for as many nails as I've used, I haven't even fully used one trap yet. Some people may have issues with this method, but if you really want to rid your lawn of moles, this method seems to work. Also, if you don't want to use roofing nails, I'm sure any other item of similar size would work just as well. The main idea is to get the glue into the holes and thus onto the mole.
If anyone else tries this, please post with your results. I would like to know if other are successful.
