Update on my mid November 08 hatch of Marans.
They all look pretty ratty.
I've lost 3 to what I strongly suspect is Mereks.
I'm so sad because the 3 pullets (of course!) I lost were SO sweet and friendly.

I'm counting the days til spring when they can get out in the sunshine and start eating grass and bugs.

winter chicks always seem to have more issues to them in my opinion due to being cooped up and not enough nature-times. whenever we had some nice days, i carted some out in the dog krates for an hour or so sitting in the sun inside my enclosed porch - they loved it!! no breeze to chill them out there. i grow them sprouts in flats and feed them daily to them on a cake pan like a treat. also i get lots of bruised fruits and veggies for the chicks before the local store chucks them out.

We just put our 20 'teenagers' who are 5 months old in hay bale coops in the pole barn, weird weather from 20 to 50 every other day. They are doing fine, glad to get them out of the sunroom..

Three in the sunroom now 3 months old, doing fine.

Five in my office, now 1 month old, doing just fine.

Hubby says, every time you hatch eggs, I end up building new brooders or chick houses, lol.

A friend hatched out 13 for me Jan 3. Had them in the house for 5 weeks, two weeks ago they went out to the 3 sided lean too in a dog house. They are out every day, at night shut in the dog house with a 75W light and are doing great. It gets down to about 17 most nights but 30's and above during the day. They have grown like weeds and I already miss them being just little fuzzy butts. Jan
