My husband and I started building the new coop yesterday. I'm alittle concerned about ventilation, should I make some windows that open and close with screen? or does anyone have any other suggestions? the taller side of the coop is going up against our fence.

we still have to add the roof and trim around everything...

this is the back of the coop and will have a door that opens for easy cleaning and getting the eggs.

laminate tile floors, i love it lol. and the door where the chickens go in and out.

Wow very nice no suggestions here, except can you come to my place and build me one. JK

I think your doing an excellent job.

Yup, definitely put some little spaces at the top of the walls with a bit of hardware cloth over them for ventilation. You can cover them some in the winter but they still need plenty of fresh air in there. And summer will be so airless for them if you don't have some type of larger openings for the heat to escape. I hated seeing my "kids" go to bed last summer and be panting after dark because, though mine are open air coops, it is still hot and humid here long after dark.
Make plenty of openings with available covers and be sure to predator proof them. Otherwise everything else looks good and you will find all sorts of things you want to change once you have it in operation. Then comes the next coop design!

If you had not already put the nest box in I would have suggested putting it on the door. But if you plan to put a food container in there then maybe that would work on the door for easier filling once you open it up.
Believe me, I am always thinking of ways to improve what I have and make my job easier.

We are going to hang the feeder next to the door, and the nest box is on the left side of the coop. kind of hard to see against all the wood. I love it, my husband is doing a great job! I will probably make the windows then that open and close with screen to keep the critters out. It gets really miserable here in the summer so that will help cool things off. He also wants to put a small fan in the top corner of the coop...but we'll see. thank you everyone! I'll post some pics on here later once everything is complete!

its 4 ft long, 3 ft wide, and 4 ft tall at the highest part of the roof. just enough for our 3 babies. Well maybe 2, we think one is a rooster lol. Here are some photos of it today. We just need to cut out a window, build the run, and finish painting! I love it so far!
