Silly question, I'm sure. Its just really hard to find reliable answers and I can't seem to find the answer searching BYC, where people would know from experience.

I have a hen who wants to sit on her eggs. My thought, as she has health issues, this would be good for her. I'm hoping she'll stop laying and save the energy for herself. My two hens get along like they're two parts of one chicken, and anything I can do to encourage them to rest more is my goal. They share the nest box or take turns, though only one lays eggs at this point.

I'm still planning to make some cold porcelain eggs for swapping out but it takes at least a week for them to cure. How long can I leave the real eggs if they aren't fertile before sanitation becomes an issue so long as the eggs are clean in appearance?

My hens have not been exposed to a rooster since 5/4/2013. I'm safe at this point, right?

Thank you for your help! :)

*I found it! I need more practice searching. It looks like 1 month is about the longest I would need to worry about fertility. Still not certain how long I can leave a laid egg in there, but I'll be swapping them for fake ones shortly. Sorry for the pest post - I can't figure out how to edit the title.
