For me, my love for chickens began years ago as a child about 10 years old. We had purchase some property in the country and one Easter, my parents gave me a basket of LIVE chicks...RIRs and BRs! I was used to getting marshmellow peeps but live peeps...WOW! I fell in love with the little fuzz balls. I took good care of them and couldn't wait to get home from school every day to run outside to see my chickens. Once they grew up, I was even more excited to collect my first egg! All of my hard work had paid off. I showed my RIR Rooster and few hens at the local fair for fun and my mom still has my ribbons I received (First & Second Place) pressed in a scrapbook. When I grew up and moved away from the farm, I couldn't keep chickens in the city and other places I lived for many years. Finally, in 2008 I was able to get some chickens again. I was so excited.....just like the young girl back on the farm, receiving her first live chicks in an Easter basket.

I decided to get chickens when I got some eggs I didn't know were fertilized,I stuck one under my broody duck and long story short she hatched it so I had to get some more chicks to keep it company

Crafty-Duck: They are beautiful!

I remember back in my teens we had some hens, ex-bats and some others and 2-3 Guinea Fowl. In the city! The neighbours loved them, thankfully. They were incredibly noisy.
I had this little hen that used to come sleep in my bedroom. Every evening she'd hop onto my windowsill and peck the glass, letting me know she wants to come in. If we left the window closed she'd go all the way round our house, pecking on the windows until we opened one for her. For some reason I can't remember what happened to our hens and Guineas. After that we didn't keep any for years until I moved in with my DH and we decided to get some for eggs. Now I'm crazy about chickens and I can't imagine life without them.
