How long before seeing improvement when treating coccidosis?

Started treating my 8 week old buff orpington this morning with Corid. I'm just guessing coccidosis is the problem. How long does it generally take before you can tell if the Corid is working?

I know there is no hard and fast rule. I'm just trying to get a sense of when I can reasonably expect to see improvement IF she does have coccidosis AND the Corid is working. A day? Two days? At what point do I give up on this treatment and try something else?

Thank you SO much for your help. For background this is the thread I posted this morning:

With all of the blood in your pictures from your other thread, I would certainly think you are treating coccidiosis. Hopefully after the first day of treatment you will start to see improvement. Unfortunately sometimes they are sick for several days before they show symptoms. Dosage is 2 tsp of the liquid Corid (or 1.5 tsp of the powder) per gallon of water--treat all chicks at the same time for 5 days. After finishing the Corid, give several days of probiotics and vitamins. Don't worry about their eating so much, but syringe feed them the Corid if they aren't drinking.

Thank you so much for your reply!

I've got Purple in a dog crate in the house and I've been giving her 2 droppers-full of the medicated water (Corid) every couple of hours. I'm using the dosage you said (1 1/2 tsp. / gallon). I haven't gotten her to eat much - MAYBE 1/2 tsp. of food (eggs, corn, chick feed) over the coarse of the whole day. She is extremely listless and just sits with her face in the corner of the crate. But she does respond to me when I talk to her & pet her, and she trills back about half the time when I call her name.

I think I MAJORLY screwed up with her right off the bat. She was listless that whole first week. I think she came to me with cocci already & maybe a depressed immune system (?). I should have dosed her right off the bat and then boosted her with vitamins & electrolytes. Maybe if I had eradicated it to begin with she could have recovered and would be healthy now. Instead I think she's had this for 8 weeks, and after all the rain last week it finally just overtook her. I just didn't know any better at the time. I am SO MAD at myself now!!

The other five are bouncing around like healthy, happy chicks. No signs of illness at all. They've got Corid in their water too, just as a precaution. I emptied the coop and scrubbed it down with scorching hot water & dish soap, then sprayed Windex and let it dry. I read ammonia kills cocci but bleach doesn't, and I know Windex is only 5% but I figured it was better than nothing. I rinsed it again, let it completely dry, and put new pine shavings in there. I'll scrub it all out again & change the pine shavings in the coop & dried grass in the run after they've had 5 days of Corid.

Thank you SO much for the advice. It's good to know I'm treating her for the right thing. Hopefully I didn't get to her too late. She's my favorite of the bunch and I will be so sad to lose her.

* UPDATE - Purple made it through the night! She's a little bit perkier this morning and there was no blood in her poo. It was mostly just water, but that's not surprising considering how much I poured down her beak yesterday, lol! She's still very unsteady on her feet, but she took a drink on her own and attempted to eat. I don't think she got anything down, but at least she tried!

That Corid seems like a miracle cure. There was so much blood coming out of her yesterday that it looked like she was hemorrhaging. I was very afraid I was going to lose her! I don't want to jinx it, but this morning I'm more hopeful and think she's got a fighting chance!

Thanks everyone for the help! I'm really, really grateful!

You can't really get rid of coccidia completely with cleaning. The chicks actually need to be exposed to it a little at a time to buid up immunity to it over several weeks to months. Just keep their area clean and dry with fresh bedding, and feeders/waters free of droppings by keeping them shoulder high. I hope she gets well, and no one else gets sick.

I have a 1 week old Easter Egger mix that has Cocci. It just started showing signs today, and I immediately stated dosing with Corid. She’s the most unique chick I’ve got. All silver gray with pale yellow in her head. It’s lethargic, sleeping on its side or back, not doing much at all. Earlier in the day it was trying to eat. I’m hoping it makes it through the night.

Welcome to BYC.

Are you sure it is coccidiosis? If you could post photos of their droppings and any other symptoms that you see that would help to be sure that is what is going on. If the corid is helping you should know at some point tomorrow.

Hope they make it. It is sad to see a chick go.

Yes, bloody droppings, lethargy, lack of appetite. I called a vet friend of mine who came and confirmed it’s Cocci. I’ve got my fingers crossed that this baby pulls through.

I had a six week old pullet get it pretty badly, and she recovered fairly quickly. I'm sure it depends on what exactly is going on inside, but I am praying she'll just be better by tomorrow. :fl
