I have 5 day old chicks and want them to be well socialized from the beginning. how long can i hold them out of brooder???

You can have them out of the brooder as long as you can keep them warm. If you are holding them and snuggling with them, then they can stay out as long as they are comfy. If they are peeping loudly (cold) or seem overly stressed, then they need to get back to the brooder.

Of course, don't keep them away from water too long either, although I don't know an exact time frame.

Thank you so much for the reply, I think 5-10 min. intervals are the way to go

I have one girl that follows me her name is gertie, i can pick her out of the line up of my 5 RIR already

It doesn't really matter, but once they get cold, you should put them back in the brooder. They like to snuggle to keep warm, so always keep them warm by that too.
