How long can I collect and store eggs for for incubating?

I just hatched 6 out of 7 eggs that I was trying to get my chicken to sit on. I just kept adding eggs to the nest until she had the 7 eggs - I left them in there a little more than a week but she would not sit, so I took 4 of them and put with a duck that I was trying to go broody. After more than a week in the duck nest I thought I just as well throw the eggs, so I grabbed those 4 and went and took the other three that I left in the original nest and brought them to the house to throw away but once I got to the house I thought what the heck, I will put them in an incubator to see if anything would develop. Well after a week they all showed veins and were starting to develop, after two weeks everything was going good but my egg turner quit working so the last few days they were turned by hand. 6 of the 7 hatched the other was fully developed but did not pip. These were all silkies or silkie cross eggs.

So these eggs sat about 16 to 18 days outside without being turned at all, but I think the weather must have been just right for this to happen

I would not trust a hen to know how long to store eggs.

Makes me wonder how birds ever made it without us? But they did and did it just fine. We often have hens hatch 100% of the eggs and when we get 100% in a 'bator it's something to make a note of. I'll trust a hen any day over me.
