How long do chickens really live? How long have chickens in your flock lived?

I've been afraid of having an automatic door for just this reason. There have been nights when we don't get the door closed at the right time, but with an automatic door, some critter could be locked in the coop without our knowledge.
So sorry for your loss; I think that varmits select actively laying hens on purpose!

I hear you and I've had nightmares since the attack about something being trapped inside. But, I would hate to have the door left open after dark (or all night) when I can't be home on time or am traveling. So, now I'm now readjusting the close time for my door about every 2 weeks (which is a pain) so that it closes soon after the last lingers go in. If I'm home, I pop my head in the coop right after closing time to make sure everything is fine. At some point I have to let go the idea that I can make everything absolutely, perfectly safe, and just do the best I can.

Do a 360 cage they are the best changed my freedom, little worries, etc.

Loving all of the various replies on here! To the OP, thank you for posting because I am a chicken newb and got vastly different answers on this question when searching online myself! I have 3 hens (2 BAs and a gold Hamburg) that are 7 years old (gotten a few weeks ago from a friend) and my friend was getting the occasional egg last summer so at least one of them is/was still laying. I am interested to see how long these ladies make it.
