I am trying to make my chickens forget each other to re-try integration. I have the aggressor separated by sight and sound from the others. How long do they need to be apart to forget each other?

Well I know that if a chicken dies the others will know the ones not there and save a spot for them. They really do remember...

They actually remember for a very long time. Last summer, first of August, I lost my brown leghorn hen. When I ordered chicks in Sept. I ordered one brown leg horn. Fast forward to when these chicks turned 16 weeks old and started free ranging with my older flock, about mid Dec. More then 4 months since the death of the first leghorn. The older hen who had been afraid of the previous leghorn now runs from the new one, even though the new one is a skittish scardy cat, lowest on the totem pole. The older hen who had been best friends with the previous leghorn rushed up to her, clucking and cooing and wanting to be shoulder to shoulder with her. To me it seems they obviously remember for a long time. Of the older flock, I've lost a couple last year and I've noticed too that they still save their spot on the roost for them. Nobody roosts in those hens old spots.

Awww. That's kind of sweet. I didn't know that about the roosts.

I guess that means my plan probably won't work if I've separated them for a couple of days???
