We found Jack, our lutino cockatiel 10 years ago in our parking lot, and its been love ever since. Knew nothing about birds, read everything we could. We have an amazing avian vet (We live in Las Vegas and he takes care of the exotic birds in the hotels). Jack eats everything, jalapenos, fresh garlic, mashed potatoes, tortillas, everything. Then we got Jill and Jimbo they eat a combo of seed and most greens, tortillas, rice, peas. We are obsessed with them to say the least. Couldn't clip the wings, Jack got so depressed when we did. So, we bought a one-story house and "bird-proofed" it, curtains, never use the front door, no teflon, no glade products, no candles. They are our babies. I never have had such a special relationship with an animals, and me and my husband are animal lovers!!! Tiels are just so special, their personalities so distinct and Jill (the male, lol) whistles and talks to us all day. Interaction is soooooo important. They are social animals, not cage animals (meaning 24/7). Take care of them, they will take care of you. We are going on 10 years for Jack, 7 for Jill, and 6 for Jimbo and they are all in great health. They love to get neck petting, and squawk like they missed me so much every day I get home. My husband is sick and stays with them every day, and I am so glad that he is there with them everyday- they are super spoiled!!! And also a recommendation to others- get the annual "avian" exam, its not expensive (for a year), and it covers blood work, stool sample, liver check, everything!!! It's worth every penny
Hi,
We have just lost our little cockatiel after 30 years. We miss her so much. She was our little old lady. So, if they are loved and fed well they can live a long time, just not long enough!!

Our Cockatiel is 18 and was healthy until 2 days ago-- - I can't afford to go to an avian vet but the symptoms are the bird is sitting on the bottom of the cage and her abdomen is fluffed up and even though she's pooping normally---her tail area is vibrating and she's quiet. I feel really bad--- don't know what it is-- Her cage is in a quiet locale in the house and I have her food and water nearby but she's just sitting there vibrating. She has had no contact with any other birds. Any ideas?????? If I took her to a vet-- she doesn't have her wings clipped-- I feel the trip will traumatize her. The only vet that I know is very expensive. My daughter still owes the vet $80 for a rabbit she treated that wound up dying anyways-- so I'm sure the vet won't be happy to see me there. (Gulty by Association). if you know what I mean. Do you think this is an egg laying issue-- a couple years ago she laid an egg after my husband had held her-- she wasn't too happy being held-- and all but she's been fine ever since that egg laying she did. Her diet has been healthy and cage clean and no drafts, etc. I am just wondering if she can recover from this. Do birds get stomach issues from humans-- my husband and daughter and I had a stomach issue yesterday that was like a 24 hour thing--nothing serious though.
George is almost 32 years old My gram got him after my gramp died unfortunately Gram passed away in 88 and My mom has had George since we are going to look up his history but he is over 30 years old He has fallen ill We think its his time. SO sad to lose him. He is a piece of what we had left of my Gram..

My sister inlaw had received a cockatiel and was told he was 15 or 16.....That was back about 5 years ago. He is a cranky little bugger these days. He likes it dark and will scream for you to cover him. He has lost some of his words but still talks and loves to play with a perch i reach in for him. He is so funny. I hope your buddy lives on. Mine is going strong.
