How long do hens lay eggs for?

Wow - I had no idea chickens could live 15 to 20 years and now I know they won't be producing eggs very long. I am already attached after 2 weeks and they are my pets NOW, so I will have them for life. As one dies, I will get a younger one who will lay eggs I suppose, or just buy eggs again? hahahah;)
