First off, I hope I'm in the right section LOL. OK this is my question for next year, in advance. So far I have 2 roos (a few more by next year) and I only want my lighter colored roos to breed my hens (No black chicks for me thank you. I already had 90% or more black this year). So basically the question is how many days in advance do I have to separate the unwanted roos so that their sperm wont be in the eggs that I'm going to set to incubate? Am I making sense?

I'm not sure this is totally correct, However on here I was told by several differant folks that it is at least 21 days. Its supposed to take 2 to 3 weeks for eggs to become infertile after you pull a roo from the hens. So I guess it would be the same. Everyone feel free to correct ( as I'm sure you will ) if I am wrong. This is just what I have been told on here. If nothing else consider this a bump !

HOLY S***!!! No offence giasmom but Im sure hoping your wrong

. That means I would have to keep my black roo seperate ALL spring AND summer

. Poor Bertrum. By the way. As an added question, why does it take so long (if this is true)???

Like I posted earlier, I don't know for sure. My question I asked was.... How long do eggs stay fertile after you pull a roo from a hen ? 14 to 21 days to be sure, was the most common answer.

Maybe if you asked a mod to move this over to the Breeding & Genetics section you would get more of a response ???? Hoping for you I am wrong !

I was arguing with myself whether or not to post it there earlier LOL. Actually I knew about the 3 week fertilization thing but now I'm wondering if that were to change if I switches roos hmm

. OK I'm gonna PM a mod right now.

You have to seperate 4 weeks to be safe! I know- it sucks. But- on the other hand- if something happens and you lose a roo- you can still get his chicks for a short while. Funny how nature works sometimes.

CRUD!!!!! So theres no way that if I seperate that roo then leave the girls with another that the other roos sperm will somehow magically over power, get rid of, or beat that roos sperm to the eggs? Yeah I know it sounds retarded LOL but im serious. Yet again

Put it this way I got ameraucana chicks, and if I remember correctly the hens had been separtaed from a orpington roo they were in with and had been mated by the pure ameraucana roo for those 30 days.... annnnd I sitll got a few mixes LOL So yes deffinatly a month.

From experience, most are good to go about three weeks after you separate the hen from the undesired rooster. I had a chance to test it out, sadly, when my main flock rooster died last year.
To be completely safe, sure, it's good to go 4 weeks, but I just switched one hen from the last rooster to her proper breeding flock and at exactly three weeks, I collected her egg and I am fairly sure it is fertile by the new rooster.
