How long do they stay scared?

I try to handle my chicks multiple times a day every day but the little featherheads still don’t seem to trust me! I’ve had them about 2 weeks. How long do baby chicks stay wary of their humans? I want to love on them but don’t want them to have baby chick heart attacks!

As prey animals, chickens are frightened when approached from above. Are you reaching into a brooder from above to handle them ? If so you are just intensifying their fears. It is best to approach from their level or allow them to come to you.

Gah, that would explain things! Yes I’m down reaching into my brooder box to pick them up and hold them and pet them. I’ll hold my hand out but they only seem interested if I have some worms in my hand, and even then they just snatch them and run away. Guess I need to practice my patience with getting them to come to me, then...

Once out of the brooder when they can approach you on their terms, they should become less fearful.
