How long does it really take to bleed out?

I personally never bleed as a cull method. It takes too long and seems extremely distressing to the animal (might be different for others, this is just how it feels for me.)

I use a broomstick/metal rod to cervically dislocate. The bird is killed instantly and the thrashing stops after 15-20 seconds. Once the muscle spasms are done I hang the bird upside-down and lash the throat with a sharp knife. Gravity usually will drain the blood between 5-10 minutes.

In my experience, the meat is a noticeably better quality than when my father used to bleed. There's very little stress on the animal and essentially no pain as the spinal cord is immediately severed. I think that may have an effect on the meat. Less stress and less adrenaline means less toughening of the meat.

Caseybear, what do you mean by how dare you? This thread is about culling and bleeding. If that bothers you, why did you come here? Most of us keep chickens to provide food for our families. You do not have to join us if you don't like what we do here.

I came here becouse I had a baby chick hatching and there was alot more blood then there suppos to be. So I asked Siri how long does it take to bleed out and she took me to this website.

I thought there where different ways to do that.
i raise animals to live. One time I went to Tysons farm In fort Payne be I lived there and he invited me over and I left with baby chick. To save them. And they don’t lay eggs but that is fine. I save dogs, cats, chickens, birds, squirrel and more.

I don't think you are crazy, just empathetic. I understand wanting to 'save' an innocent creature, so please try to understand that we raising chickens and other livestock at home for personal use are very cognizant of the welfare of our animals. We are certainly NOT like the factory farms where the dollar is what determines the action. We carefully tend our flocks, treat them when ill, even so far as providing entertainment for them. We provide protection from predators, even if that predator happens to be our dog who lives here as well. But, and here's the difference, we realize that this is a source of food just like our garden or fruit/nut trees. The better environment we provide, the better the food we produce. This is the circle of life and has always been so. Trust me, we dread the day we must cull even if it's for our freezers. We do everything in our power to make it less stressful and painless to the bird. Cervical dislocation is instant death--breaking your neck and severing the spinal cord has that result. Bleeding out is the same as with a human--you simply fade out. Ask anyone who has ever hunted game-you want the animal as least stressed as possible or the meat will be tough. We do it calmly, quickly and in the least stressful way we can.

Siri led you astray.
This is the subforum you needed - emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

Some of the very best people to answer emergency health questions also slaughter some of their birds. They know about anatomy.
It's very hard to seriously keep chickens and never have to kill any. People who process themselves are often motivated in part by empathy for the animals, giving them a good life and an easy end, far far better than the factory farms.
I feel terrible when I think what those factory chickens go through. And I want to only use fear-free ways to slaughter (still figuring that out). But the actual death is not the sad thing, it's the way they experience life.

I don’t like how factory do it either.
and I understand the circle of life I just don’t agree in it some ways but it’s like and life is hard sometime.

I had a cat bring me a squirrel and I named it cherrios and the squirrel was paralyzed on it back end ate and drank good it survived 2 weeks and i put it in a contained pen and had it covered but my cat lifted it up and grabbed it did not know where he put it so I looked could not find it that night but the next day it came to me in terrible condition it had maggets all over it and I was upset at my cat for that and it passed away that night in my dads hand peacefully.

but the morale of what I’m saying is animals kill other animals. we eat meat from animal.
