hi guys i recently picked up 2 white rock bantam hens that i am hoping to use for 4-H. one of them has a few problems but they both have a mild case of scaly leg mites. i have been treating with the motor oil and the petroleum jelly techniques. i have been doing this for about a month now and the one hen is almost all better but the other still has it. just wondering how long it takes to get rid of and if they grow new scales in mild cases.

thanks for your time

Probably just a few days to smother them all, but it may take a few weeks for the legs to heal and look better.
Using a spray like this: View media item 7895288Will be easier to apply...I personally would not suggest using motor oil on any animal.

i have noticed that the scales of the one that had it worst and still has it now are a grey colour rather then the normal yellow colour. the scales where all yellow when we got them. is it the new scales coming in or dead mites? the one that is almost better has almost all yellow scales but a bit of grey on the ends.

i will look and see if i can get some of that spray from the grocery store. i haven't seen any scales fall out.
thank you

Taking a soft toothbrush and SLIGHTLY brushing the legs will help lessen up the mite poop too. Do not scrub to hard though..that can cause an infection.

Those cans of spray are cheap...a dollar...and I like to think the coconut one would help heal the legs faster too.
