I have a pullet, "Rye" that has been trying to get over wry neck. She has been getting somewhat better.... the spasms are pettty much gone but when she gets stressed, she turns her head upside down. She is in the coop with the others. She is still getting vit B and E twice a day, novo doxin antibiotic once a day and selenium every 2 or 3 days.
I am stopping the antibiotic in 2 days which will make treatment for 21 days. It worries me to stop it because my husband accidently fed everyone yogurt which rye ate and it nulls the effect of the antibiotic, causing a hard relaspe.
Anyways, soon I want to taper all vitamins and meds because i cant be home every night, I may have to have someone come look after my chckens a day or 2 a week... I cant ask him to hand feed all this stuff to rye.
So my question is.... does it normally take so long to cure wry neck? Maybe there is some damage and she will always be like this? Will she always need to be hand fed vitamins? (because i cant do this forever)

Hi Tanya!
It took one of my chicks 2 weeks to get over it. I gave her Poly Vi Sol (baby vitamins) and also Vitamin E in a syringe 2x daily.
She has turned into one of my nicest hens and none of her chicks have had the problem.
Good Luck!

I have heard of several cases taking perhaps anywhere from 2 wks to 2 mo depending on severity, Most Isolated the chicken in an area free from wire and a tall topped cage. feed higher protein and vitamins and do whatever you need to do to keep the bird quiet and peaceful like keeping the cage covered and dark to calm and warm the bird. All second hand info but it does appear to have been helpful for those who have used it.

Well, she has been just great, I took her off the antibiotics 8 days ago and she has been great. The last 2 nights I noticed a bit of twisting and then tonight she is spasming and twisting all over the floor. THIS IS A NIGHTMARE!!! I hate to sound selfish but we are going on 6 weeks and in the end, after all of this work, I am going to have to end up putting her down! I should have stuck to gardening!!! I am so sad and angry right now. Tomorrow I am supposed to go to a staff party at my newish job and I have plans to be gone all night. I am scared the others will peck her to death. I cant separate her, I don't have time to set all that up, I leave at 7:30 am.
Anyways.
I am not sure.... is it time to put her down? Should I start the antibiotics again? I am still giving the vit E, B and every few days, selenium. I dont know what happened. I am pretty disapointed.

Try dosing her with B12. If you can get injectable I would opt for that. Of all things to make me think about B deficiency its the latest cat food recall. Seems there is not enough thiamine in the dry cat food which causes a deficiency. The outward behavior is so close to what we see with our birds its not funny.

Thanks Robin, I gave her the B12 injection a few days ago. She is still kind of twisted up. The others are accepting her fairly well though she is low in the pecking order. I don't know if she would be in pain or what. Not sure what to do.

Well things are going well here in Chester, Nova Scotia. Little Wry survived her coldest night yet with all the others. She has still been getting vit E and B but no more selenium or antibiotics. She is doing very well, no relapse for about 4 or 5 days.
I have a theory..... I noticed she improved greatly when I stopped using flurescents and then she improved again when I put the timer back on so that they have 6 or 8 hrs complete darkness. I had not been doing that because, well, long story. But since I have resumed she has been perfect.
Anyways,
Thanks for all of your help so far! I will keep you posted!
