how often does a chicken have to be tested for NPIP

I dont think you can have just one NPIP bird and have that one tested and not be NPIP yourself. Are you NPIP? If not, then you cant certify one bird that lives with your flock, IMO. I hope I'm not misunderstanding you. I believe you must retest once a year if you have an NPIP flock.

They come by and check my flock every 4 months for viruses for free but to have them tested for salmonella there is small charge. I am not suppose to get birds anymore from non npip sources . If I do they test all the new ones at 4 months to make sure they all are still free of disease. I am just getting started not selling birds or eggs. So I guess they are a little more leinent at this time. I do have a closed in area and range only in the 48X12 fenced area. I so far have tested free of any of the things they test for. I hope this helps. Gloria jean

NPIP is for the flock it came from
The National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) is a cooperative Federal-State-Industry program developed to prevent or control certain egg-transmitted, hatchery-disseminated poultry diseases. NPIP identifies states, flocks, hatcheries, and dealers that meet disease control standards so that customers can be sure that they poultry they buy has tested free of certain diseases.

Being a member of NPIP allows greater ease in moving hatching eggs and live birds within the state, across state lines, and to other countries. In fact, most countries will not accept poultry products unless they come from a NPIP participant.

In Arkansas you can get pt test for a 90 day certificate on any bird, However, most shows, etc, require one within something like 30 days. To be certified, they test once a year a certain percentage of your flock, depending on if you have incubators or not, and inspect the premesis to insure clean safe environment. swabs are also done of your incubators. Then you have to sign that you won't buy anything not npip certified.
